I would say that Martha understood Lionel never tried to hurt her willingly if he was able to stay waiting for her even after she'd asked him to leave her alone.
And Lionel... well... he finally risked to say what he felt 'cause that was his last chance... he'd lied her, he'd introduced her to a bad man, and he'd been spying her... the only oportunity to not lose her was finally saying "I love you" and hope she felt the same for him... .. .
